The 36 Hour Dining Guide to San Francisco
One of my favorite things in life is weekend getaways. Whether you're hitting the road early Friday afternoon or sneaking away for a day, count me in! Where are my weekend warriors at? I know you feel me on this. This is why we're all working for the weekend, right? My husband and I take a quick 36 hour trip to San Francisco every year and it's so much fun to see how much fun we can have on this short, overnight trip. We always manage to squeeze in so many amazing sips and bites while wandering around the city.
We get on the early morning flight from Seattle. Still wiping the sleep from our eyes we (responsibly) throw back Mimosas and Bloody Marys at the airport. We land way too early to check into our hotel so we leave our bags at the front desk, then I do a cruel thing to my husband. Okay, it’s not that awful but it's definitely not his first choice on vacation. Ready for it? I make him take an indoor cycling class at Flywheel with me. If you follow my Instagram you know it's my go-to workout of choice. They have so many studios around the country there's bound to be one where I'm traveling and it's a fun, quick 45 minutes sweat session. Okay, so it’s not as dramatic as I made it out to be but it's the last thing he wants to do at 9 am on vacation. It may sound like a weird way to kick off your trip but once the endorphins are pumping we’re wide awake and ready to take on the short weekend vacation. Plus, I’ve burned a few of those calories that I plan on consuming. Curious what we're able to squeeze into 36 hours? Here’s the damage, I mean list…
Tartine Manufactory
I've been obsessed with their bread and pastries for a long time. Yep, I’ve definitely been that person lining up at the Mission location to get pastries on a weekend morning. The Manufactory was packed for brunch but the wait was reasonable. We grabbed a glass of wine at the bar while we waited for a table, checked out the menu and game planned what we were going to order. Luckily for us, a couple of bar seats opened up within 15 minutes of arriving so we cozied up to the bar top. We stuffed ourselves full of delicious food and waddled out there fat and happy.
Ferry Building Marketplace
An obligatory stop when you’re in San Francisco and rightly so. There are a ton great vendors and restaurants that it'll keep you busy for hours. We opted to graze on a few items from our favorite spots. Cowgirl Sidekick for raclette, Miette Patisserie for a few macaroons, and Urban Remedy for juice shots because you can never get too much fruit or veggies in your life. If you’re looking for a sit-down, full-service experience suggest The Slanted Door, a modern (and extremely delicious) Vietnamese restaurant or Hog Island Oyster Co., for all of the seafood your heart desires.
The Riddler
I love, love, love Champagne so it is no surprise that I fell head over heels for this little bar. It reminded me of Paris and the cute cafes I spent so much time in. This little Hayes Valley gem of a spot has over 100 Champagnes by the bottle but they also like to have a little fun. If you're feeling like turning up the festivities with a bang, or should I say bong, you can get a Chambong. Yep, it's a thing and on the menu. Gotta love a wine bar that doesn't take itself too seriously. We opted for more of a traditional route with Champagne, caviar and complimentary popcorn. I loved that they served the caviar with potato chips. The perfect amount of crunch and salt. Decadent and over the top you say? We're on vacation so "treat yo self!" If Champagne isn't your jam they have a few still wine and beer options.
Saratoga
I had every intention of ordering a few snacks to line our bellies for the evening. Instead, I couldn’t resist the homemade Ho Ho dessert paired with a shot of vintage Branca Menta. Hey, what can I say? We're on vacation and dessert calories don’t count. Though I wish I had ordered a few savory dishes as well. The menu of comfort food and classics was right up our alley.
The Snug
As luck would have it two dear friends from Seattle were also in town and we were able to catch up with them over some snacks and cocktails. They were at The Snug which was very close to our hotel and our next dining spot. The food menu is small but mighty. We snuck a few bites of what our friends ordered and everything was delicious. The ceilings are tall so it can get a little noisy in there but it’s a great spot in a neighborhood that doesn’t have a ton of dining options. They have a great cocktail program and a great selection of beers to choose from. Put it on the list if you're going to be in the area.
Statebird Provisions
We have been trying to have dinner here since 2012 but I am horrible at making dinner reservations. Which is why six years after they've opened my husband and I are having dinner at 10:30 pm because it’s the only reservation available for weeks. I will take what I can get. Statebird definitely lived up to the hype after all of these years. It’s seasonal fare that is served in the style of dim sum. If you’re like me and enjoy trying a lot of things when you’re out this is definitely up your alley. We had high hopes of hitting one more spot before heading back to the hotel that evening but I think dessert number four of the day did us in. Again, vacation calories do not count!
Blue Bottle Coffee
I am a Seattlelite through and through which is why I consider coffee food. Blue Bottle is a great coffee stop while in SF and with multiple locations around town you’re bound to be near one. Opt for the New Orleans Cold Brew if you need to jump start your day.
Sightglass Coffee
Speaking of coffee, this shop got the Seattlelite coffee stamp of approval. The SoMa location not only a coffee shop but is also the location of their roastery. Tucked away on the second floor is the Affogato Bar which pairs unique ice cream flavors with your choice of coffee. Ice cream and coffee? Breakfast of champions!
Kin Khao
We were lucky to score a lunch reservation at this one star Michelin Thai restaurant in the Tenderloin. Tucked away inside the trendy Parc 55 Hotel it easily could be missed if you didn’t know it was there. Authentic Thai food with only the best ingredients. Our only complaint was that there was just two of us and we couldn’t try more dishes.
In-N-Out Burger
Though In my heart belongs to our local burger chain Dick's Drive-In, I always like to pay homage to other states' beloved burger joints. On the way out of town, we stopped by for a couple of Double-Doubles Animal Style. We skipped their fries because, in my opinion, are aren't worth the calories. Though our burgers were good I wouldn't go out of my way to seek one out. I know that last comment is going to get me a lot of grief...
